  • Hi Heather  - glad I happened across your old email and that you are still in your role at Reynolds and able to connect by phone!

    http://ourecovillage.org/courses-events/education-at-our/
is OUR ECOVILLAGE's new educational programming details.  We have been supported by government to become an extension classroom for public/private schools (from wide and far).  With this in mind we now have curriculum for half/full day tours (with a hands-on learning project if requested), weekend programs, and 3 to 5 day residential immersion programs.

It would be great to host your school still and we can arrange this for any time March 2013 onwards.  We also have the "Youth and Community Convergence" here as a weekend program on May 4/5th, 2013.  This is a full weekend of multiple programs and many schools and youth groups coming together.  It has extremely positive feedback from all the teachers and facilitators who attend the weekend.

Looking forward to talking to you in the new year.....hoping you have a great holiday in the meantime.

    • READY, SET, SOLVE Challenge Submissions:

#1 We do a good job of recycling at Reynolds...but what about REDUCE 1st?  How do we really get staff and students (beyond one-off campaigns) to stop buying Starbucks coffee in disposable cups (as an example)? ... or avoid packaging in general... one possible specific challenge could be to help us form some kind of unique partnership with Starbucks... operate out of school at lunch with reusable mugs, having a deposit on the mug that you get back when it is returned?

#2 Transportation Challenge...Dr. Andrew Weaver (Climate Scientist from U-Vic) says that here in Greater Victoria, the single most important change the average person could make to positively impact Climate Change is to use cars les... how can we address this in a high school as a starting place for the community?  How can we positively effect behavourial change in teachers, parents and senior students who are driving to school?  Get our automotive students to fix up dontated cars to starr a car share program?  Hmmm?

    * will get answer if our challenge is chosen by Jan. 19th, 2013

    Guest Presenter:
Kimiko Foster, visiting us on behalf of the Capital Regional District CRD to offer a partnership opportunity with your schools “Green Team” in our current laundry detergent reduction campaign that is running through October and November.
Please see the link below for more information regarding our Laundry Detergent Reduction Campaign.

    http://www.crd.bc.ca/wastewater/sourcecontrol/residents/detergentreduction.htm

For the next two months I will be going out to local Laundromats and washing machine distributors to educate residents about soft water and surfactants.  I have 1000 T-shirts with the logo, “Half the suds, Cleans your duds”, and recipe cards for two do-it-yourself chemical free laundry detergent. To further the effectiveness of this campaign I am interested in meeting with your schools Green Team to offer them the opportunity to educate their peers. Ideally I would like to come to the school, meet the team, and educate them about the soft water and some issues around having excess surfactants in the wastewater. I would give each student a T-shirt if they wanted one. If there was a lot of interest within the group I am open to leaving a set amount of T-shirts, recipe cards, and information sheets for them to take into the school and educate their peers.

Here is another link to our Clean green cookbook with chemical-free cleaning recipes including the laundry detergent recipes.

Now Accepting Challenges for Ready, Set, Solve

Capital Region non-profits and institutions are eligible.

Ready, Set, Solve is a fun, applied learning program focused on getting post-secondary students to help solve small, but real, climate-related challenges that exist in the Capital Region, starting in January 2013.

Throughout November we are accepting challenges to be included in a pool for student teams to choose from. All sustainability related challenges are accepted - think energy efficiency, emissions, waste, water, food, and transportation.

Eligible organizations include community associations, non-profit societies, charitable societies, schools, universities, colleges and municipalities. If your challenge(s) is selected, you will have a team of students working on your project starting in late January until late March 2013.

Learn more on our website at: Ready, Set, Solve.

We will be recruiting student teams at the beginning of December.

Attached is the challenge submission form with a list of FAQs: Application or contact Nikki for a Word version.
